The buildings favour natural daylight over electric lighting, and incorporate slatted balconies, back reflecting light shelves, and triple-glazed windows. The most notable feature is perhaps the glass stair towers which act as ‘solar chimneys’, and provide natural ventilation and heating. The building is connected to the Nottingham District Heating Scheme. The Autonomous House, Southwell An architect designed house in a Conservation Area which maximises the use of high thermal mass and passive solar design. It needs no dedicated heating system, but benefits from a photovoltaic array in the garden.
